Our communities

Our targeted communities display inequitable patterns of ownership, wealth and social and economic practices.

Smutsville and Sizamile display a peripheral peri-urban and informal economy.

Karatara, Fairview, Farleigh and Elandskraal are outlying rural areas. The majority of the population in these targeted areas is unskilled, unemployed and contrives to make a living.

Poverty, unemployment and alcohol and drug abuse go hand in hand. With the increasing HIV/AIDS and TB prevalence, this gives rise to further unemployment, poverty and alcohol and drug abuse. The reality is that we are dealing with communities that are constantly complex and dynamic and in a state of flux.

In the South Cape Karoo Region, of which these are a part, the socio-economic indicators among others are:
  • 35% of households earn R 12000 per annum or less
  • 50 % of adults have less than Senior Certificates
  • a teenage pregnancy rate of 9%.
